I used an angled probe, others use screw drivers. This will prevent scratches when the door panel is being removed. This is to release the casing clip. Behind the glass, on the floor of the aluminum frame, are 2 torx screws which attach the black plastic mirror housing floor at the left of the picture above. I did this, before the write up, this would of been helpfull! If you have a mk4 Passat, the center position of the mirror adjustment knob isn't off, it's actually heat pictured below. You want to release these before pulling the housing up. Pry the clip out and let it hang red arrow below.
Dunno how you got them off then Joe! Next remove the housing from the holder by lifting the tab on the side. Remove small rubber bung underneath and insert very thin screwdriver or similar and push towards the front of the car. These braces, the door frame, and the pillar between the doors are designed to be stiffer than the crumple zone steel and are supposed to stop a side impact and cabin intrusion. This is a wide angle mirror. Remove the T30 torx bolts along the edge of the door skin. See and for more details. The mirror is just held in place with plastic clips and will release with a little pressure.
If you're careful it won't get damaged but you'll probably bang it around a little the first time. It's a bit more trickier. This is because they're still built off a mk5 chassis. Connect new side mirror lens or side mirror housing. Side view motor removal and replacement To remove the motor, remove the 3x T10 torx screws.
Inside that hole is the second tab. Unplug the motor plug and remove the motor. The later cars don't have this. There's a little flexible trim flap that goes inside the door skin. Installation is the reverse of the above procedure. Replacing it with a used piece can also be much cheaper than repairing minor dents or serious scratches.
