The alphanumeric system that defines many Japanese motorcycles has never been very instructive, and the bike we are writing about here was only a one-year model…but it was a good one. The styling was all new, with two models being offered. It runs and drives very well, no problems with anything mechanical on this bike. Great bike in its day and imo still today. Brakes are good, it starts easy and runs smooth with plenty of power. The entire package makes for a nice ride on a twisty road, banks and turns with ease, and has plenty of power. This bike is the classic muscle cruiser of the early 80's.

The latest version of the concept comes from Royal Enfield with the 2019 Interceptor 650. Riding like you stole it, bits and pieces like the centerstand and footpegs might scrape in corners, but just take off the stand as any serious roadracer would do. For that I could have bought 15 of these bikes, but I only need one.

Imagine the weight and handling of a classic British twin. Its a beauty and a bargain when you consider everything thats included. Color is Midnight Blue with some metallic. Drove it as my daily driver until October '97, putting 24k miles on it. In 1981, this model did get air adjustability on the leading-axle fork, and the shocks got rebound-damping adjustability, along with standard preload.
Occasional cam, clutch, valve and gearbox problems up to 35k which become much more common thereafter until crank or pistons start to break up after 50k. But I was 19 when I got it and and used to do some silly stuff on the bike, including riding it to the lake in flip-flops and doing 130 mph on the highway. Valve adjustment was almost old-fashioned, with locknuts allowing home mechanics to get the gaps right…or wrong, depending on their competence. Oh, and 3 T-500 Titans. I got it cheap used. Rode it and loved it. Click on the image for larger format. But exhaust and foot peg had to be replaced this time. Only has natural aging on seat as is usual for bikes of this age. Found it sitting on a side yard going to bike heaven.
Changing out the rear sprocket from the stock 38 to a 36-tooth model is a popular modification, along with swapping the front 15 to a 16-tooth sprocket. The E and G versions shared a 56. The top of the piston was indented in four places to accommodate the valves. A new frame connected the swingarm and new 17-inch rear wheel to the steering head, and the front fork was now a bigger 37mm item, sporting that anti-dive valving. Period road tests say the engine burns oil. The excellent styling means that quite a few ended up cherished and remain in remarkably good nick, despite the way the exhaust, calipers and alloy rots in a winter.
Please support my music career! Every dimension seems scaled to provide big-bike feel for midsized riders. Fresh oil, filter and oil filter gasket. Neither variation lends itself to the day to day riding back and forth to work. I was looking at newer bikes but I am enjoying this and it is paid for. I sold it before being transferred to Pearl Harbor. I even sprung for the cast-wheel version.
